An Assemblage Toward The "$300 House Open Design Challenge"

The lens:

“[A] challenge not yet addressed . . .  is the urban challenge.  Slums by their nature are located where land and space are limited. I suggest that rather than leading with "how do we build this house" it's better to come up with "how can we create an affordable means of acquiring property" and only then deciding what that property looks and acts like.”  Realize to that “subsistence income means that every penny is needed, is spent. It means you are on the edge at all times. It makes life itself an emergency.” “It will be unfortunate, if the house were to be designed by those who will never live in it . . . “ A western strategy has been “reverse innovation . . . [which] is any innovation  . . . adopted first in the developing world. Increasingly we see companies developing products in countries like China and India and then distribute them globally.”  “. . . [In addition,] consumers in Brazil, China, India, and Mexico are more likely to purchase and promote brands that support good causes, outpacing their peers in the West.”  .”  “[So] into this world, we welcome the $300 House. Its success will depend on the ability to create a market for the idea.” It started with “Vijay's and Christian's napkin sketch . . . [which] was . . . meant to spur thinking . . .”

“Meanwhile, if formalizing slums is the greatest demographic issue facing the twenty-first century, and cities are going to be the nexus of intervention and change, then delivery of water and sanitation into established urban environments becomes the most important long-term priority for donor and governmental entities seek to help the global south advance.”
